We would like to share with you a brief history of the zoo, to tell you where we've come from, how we've have grown what we intend to do as we head into the future! And why in particular, we feel so passionately - that all children should have physical access to animals in order to foster a better understanding of wildlife and the natural world around them!
For this reason it is important that we provide safe, knowledgeable animal husbandry for all of the animals within our care. We are proud to employ well-trained, highly qualified Keepers with a wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise at their fingertips. Specialist Animal Keepers and Education Officers work closely together to make sure that we offer the very highest standards of animal care to ensure that we deliver effective Conservation Education to all our visitors. To accomplish this, we offer many daily scheduled Keeper talks, feeding sessions and demonstrations in order to inform the public as to the many ways in which we can all contribute to conservation - whether it is on an international level - or closer to home, in your own garden at home!
So who are we?We are an all weather family focused attraction based in South Woodham Ferrers, in the heart of Essex, England - and we would like you to know what we have to offer, should you decide to spend a day with us here at Tropical Wings Zoo.
We have plenty of Wings for you to choose from, as our name suggests we have wings of every shape, colour, shade, size and description within the zoo. As we are home to one of the finest butterfly houses to be found in UK, as well as having a superb collection of birds, including many species of parrot.
Tropical Wings, which opened in 2000, has grown from being predominately a butterfly house to a zoo, with a range of animals including wallabies, frogs and lemurs.
In November 2017 it was announced in local papers that this place was closing in a months time for good

Tropical Wings Zoo in South Woodham Ferrers is closing for good next month after the owners have decided to retire due to ill health.
A statement posted on the Tropical Wings Facebook page this afternoon (November 14), written by the zoo owners Dennie and Rona Strong, confirmed that the zoo will close for good in December.
The statement said: "It is with great sadness that we will be closing our wonderful zoo forever on December 3.
"We have been on a fantastic journey with what has become a business to be very proud of, but sadly, due to ill health, the time has come for us to retire.
Finally closed its doors to the public on 4th December 2017 and all the animals were found new homes

Have had my eye on this place for while being local finally decided to check it out
couple of us headed down around 10am one Sunday morning after getting past the metal fence we found the whole place deserted and overgrown
spent a couple hours in here and didn't see a sole
all the animals have gone and they have kindly left all the cages and buildings unlocked the only thing that was locked up was the restaurant
the place is littered with cctv cameras and the power is still on but luckily none of the alarms were on
another successful explore this place was exactly as i remember it
