I was going to bob down HFLB but when I reached down for my phone at the end of the culvert I realized that I'd left it on the dashboard of the van and I'd parked behind Mayfair, I decided to head back asap and hope it wasn't too late to stop the side window going through.

UMIST is on land which used to be home to a large number of dyers' factories by the River Medlock, which now runs through underground culverts beneath the site.
UMIST in 1942 showing the factories on land which later became part of the campus.
An original bend in the river can be traced by observing the angles of two of the arches of the railway viaduct alongside UMIST. These were built slanted to accommodate the winding river.

UMIST is just a box culvert with no redeeming features

Yeah the original watercourse was re-routed via the crete, some good old history connected with that area, and good to see again
