I won't ramble on too much about the history of this as it's all been said before. Well worth a visit though if you like being underground.
One thing to note, the entrance at the North Docks is fenced off and if you are of a certain size, you will struggle to squeeze through the bars which have been stretched apart. The other option is to get in at Edge Hill station but that means crossing the track at platform one which is not advisable.
The first part is Waterloo tunnel and is partly filled in. It's quite wet and muddy with a lot of oil or diesel on the ground. Wear old shoes/boots. I wouldn't recommend wellies, it's not that wet.
Get wrapped up as it's quite cold, I wore a t-shirt, jumper and coat and it was fine but you can see the condensation from your breath. Take a decent torch, we had just one good torch and another one would have helped.
Once past the Byrom Street cutting you enter the Victoria tunnel and this is mostly dry and level all the way.
The most interesting parts for me was spotting the ventilation shafts. I tried to find these overground on the way back and managed to find two which you can see below.
Take a packed lunch, it's a long walk when you are stopping to take photos. There's no Starbucks in there which surprised me as they are everywhere else. We walked back from Edge Hill to the North Docks at pace and did it in 40 minutes, so you can do it quick.
