Visited this a while back but I have only just got around to a posting a report, Visited with Jimmy. I’m sure he’ll have something to add to this thread, probably a moan about him wearing shorts and getting stung lulz.
I couldn’t tell you which buildings we visited but only 1 or 2 were left out, At first we thought we wouldn’t have a long visit but every corner we turned and building we wandered through there were more chances for photographs.
The history has been covered many times but here is some brief info;
Opened on 1st April 1873 it was built with bricks made on site. The hospital was built in four sections; St Lukes, St John’s, Cameron House and St Margaret’s. As well as these a Sanatorium was built with only fourteen beds known as Fryars Villa, This was for long term illnesses such as TB.
The hospital was very self sufficient with its own Church, Ballroom, Butchers & Post Office. In the late 1930’s/early 1940’s it was the biggest mental hospital in the country and electroencephalography was used often at the Hospital. I can’t really go into detail about that because I have little knowledge of what it is all about however I do know that they used GAMMA & BETA types during this procedure, Same as the Radio’s in the newer VW’s!
After closing in 1995 the place is in an awful state with anything that can be removed long gone. The locals have been in to do some poor graffiti and have ripped all the floors up in search for scrap...
