This is an extension of a larger mine situated within a populated centre. Due to the distance that mined coal was being hauled underground to the extraction point that was existing, in 1992 RAG (Ruhrkohle Aktien Gesellschaft) decided to sink another shaft to get miners closer to the seam. The most economical location turned out to be slap bang in the middle of a forest.
This surface operation was only active from 1992 until 2001 and is a fairly modern affair.
Photos: there's a Kaue (Changing room with cage set up) and Pit head with a large modern brick enclosed headstock.
We'll start off in the Kaue.
Then heading into the lamp collection and checking in aisle.
Ascending the headstock.
Brown Boveri controlled winding gear.
View across the dense forest towards Kraftwerk Herne.
Explosive store.
Haulage trucks.
