Ashby Tunnel, Leicestershire. July 2020.

Ashby Tunnel, 308yards.

Built around 1799 / 1802 Ashby Tunnel otherwise known as Old Parks Tunnel just outside the village of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire was situated on the line which left the Burton - Coalville line at Ashby Station and headed north through Worthington and continued on to join the Stenson - Sheet Stores Jn line at Chellaston and continue towards Derby via Melbourne. I believe the tunnel was originally built for use as a tramway to connect with the canal networks but later in 1845 it became part of the London Midland, Scottish Railway (LMSR) during the purge for increased coal traffic and other goods. Originally 447 yards in length during the transition to suit heavy rail use the tunnel was rebored and shortened to 308yards, the last train to grace the tunnel was reportedly a special charter train in 1952 with the tunnel closing officially in 1955.

Explore was about as simple as it gets, Tunnel is just off the A512 outside the village of Ashby de la Zouch, we followed the hedgerow towards the large cluster of trees on the northern side of the bypass keen not to get spotted by anyone we were super stealth... hardest part was navigating the muddy slope to the old trackbed, into the tunnel via the hole and then a leisurely stroll in and around hopefully images explain the rest some interesting bricks with NCB Watnall branding so I arranged a few for a quick snap! Probably a bit sad upon reflection :D

Thanks for looking

Super crisp! No flooding inside? It was pretty bad in there earlier this year.
Nothing of significant note the odd ingress trickling down from the roof crown, but zero standing water, having seen how bad it was I didn’t know what to expect! Thanks for the comment MotionlessMike! Appreciate it :thumb

Always, anyone who contributes well, has stunning reports, or even tries, I take time to welcome, & encourage. But I do as you know admire your tunnels very very much.
I try to be as informative as I can be without being utterly boring ;) Let the pics do the talking which is probably a bit lazy but I think it works,I appreciate your comments and praise, makes it all the more worthwhile when you get positive feedback

nice crisp shots :thumb
Looks quite dry in there
Thanks! Was a steady explore this, although I received several aggressive messages from the landowner and his son about visiting this place, so the images on social media have been pulled, Although there’s been a fair few visits since I went... I’ll probably just publish them on here going forward, Thanks for your comment
