This is a poor report, what's interesting here is, not the explores but what caused the explores. The mountains are littered with these buildings abandoned when Etna's lava flow gets too close. So I also have a question, have you explored somewhere where the reason for the abandonment is more interesting than the explore or unusual?
Mount Etna, located on the eastern coast of Sicily, Italy, is the highest active volcano in Europe, standing at over 10,000 feet (3,200 meters). It has a base circumference of about 93 miles (150 kilometers) and covers an area of approximately 600 square miles (1,600 square kilometers). Known for its frequent eruptions, Etna has been active for about 2.6 million years, with its most violent eruption recorded in 1669, which caused significant destruction.
We were here for a month and Etna was amazing. For 2 weeks she was in an Effusive eruption, so she was leaking large volumes of lava. And then just as she stopped and we thought the show was over, she went into a full eruption, exploding lava into the air. This wasn't on the scale she's capable of but it was still amazing. She erupts a number of times a year, so you've got a good chance of seeing something. However, the gods have to be on your side that you can see her, as she might be covered in cloud for 5 days+. We were lucky, not sure if I can post the pictures tho.
The lava flow
Close call
Second explore, hotel. This is the car park, you can see why they abandoned. Although the hotel itself is elevated and reasonably safe. But lava flows can last for years, but its normally days or weeks. So one eruption can totally change the landscape.
Lava flow now a great ladder over the wall.
