It was fascinating reading this thread as it took me back to 40 years ago when a group of us explored the tunnel using a collapsible canvas canoe. From what I remember, as sadly my photos taken then have not survived the passage of time, little has changed although there may be a bit more mud . It makes me wonder if anyone else has visited the interior of the tunnel in the intervening years .

Nice to see there is a new generation of intrepid explorers who are probably just as mad as we were back then. Well done lads.

Four boats began the voyage - only two survived to the end

Blimey - 2 trusty boats and their valiant captains lost to Davy Jones' locker

Let their names not be forgotten (who were they again?)

My boat got me back under it's own propulsion, accompanied by a gurgling sound and stream of bubbles. God knows what happened to the other explorer. Must be still in there I guess.

Is that the same one that sprung a leak in Camden and had to be repaired by Master Shipwright Styru pulling a sail underneath or something equally nautical?

As my fellow Subterranean Argonaut rightly says this is a tale of two halves, the previously explored section, and the world that lies behind the fall, a veritable Styx – with water deep, cool and clear.

Below are a few of my shots from the day, I’ll not even tell you which are before the fall, and which are after – it is so obvious – a tale of two parts, with brown water and mud one end, and virgin clean goodness beyond.

As Urbanity says, the main fall is very dodgy looking – and as you can see some parts of the roof beyond this have suffered multiple falls, leaving large sections with little or no visible means of support.

Cheers to Urbanity and Frayedsanity for the company.

Thats not camera distortion - look at the profile of that roof - how the f*uck is that supporting itself

IM004787.jpg

IM004792.jpg

One of the many falls - no support for the roof at all thanks to the fall on the left
- at least the right side is intact ... oh f*ck - no it isn't...
