I found this place by chance while driving through Llangollen over the Easter weekend. After noticing the building, I quickly parked in the nearby Aldi car park and walked over for a closer look. On the ground floor, I entered a large, open space cluttered with junk. It seems locals have been using it as a dumping site, which is pretty sad. The next room looks like it was once an office space, probably after the brewery closed. Moving to the next level, many rooms are slowly being taken over by plants growing outside and creeping through broken windows. In some of the upper rooms, parts of the roof have fallen in, and the walls are peeling and covered in mould. The old building shows its age with debris scattered everywhere and signs of neglect.
This building used to be the Pen y Bryn Brewery, which started operating around 1840. Over the years, it worked under different names until the 1870s when it became Tanqueray’s Llangollen Brewery. It was the town’s biggest brewery until it closed in the 1930s. Today, the remaining structures are all that’s left of its brewing history. After closing, the building was used for light industry and offices. Still, if you know where to look, you can spot some clues to its past as a brewery.
