Cracking part 2. Really cool explore. Love the control panel, ammo boxes and of course the chimneys on that house. Well worth a part 2
Thank you. Yeah definitely worth going back. This visit was so much better, nicer weather, more buildings. I thought you might like the chimneys.

I was there for an official visit around 1990. A lot of the older buildings were disused even then - particularly those relating to the batch production of NG and the cordite rolling houses. I think that control room you showed may have been for the Biazzi continuous NG production plant. I remember the director telling me it was not uncommon for hard drinkers to down a large quantity of scotch just before leaving the railway station, so they could clock in before the stuff took effect... There was a pond for collecting NG waste water. Apparently it was regularly dynamited to deal with any NG which had accumulated at the bottom.
Oh that is a long time ago. I can imagine they wound a lot of the site down over the years as less was needed. Interesting about the control room thank you. I can quite believe that about the drinking, I bet loads of stuff went on what should not be e done 😁

That's a very immersive report. I can only begin to imagine the process for decontamination of the associated buildings and land before development could begin on here.

Amazing report, great write-up with equally great photos to complement. That control room is something special. Can’t imagine what the site looked like in its prime, would’ve been able to spend weeks exploring it.

Thank you. I would loved to have seen it in its prime. They reckon you could definitely spend days there if you covered everything.

I thought these might be of interest. The colour one shows the later NAB nitroglycerine plant under construction (1990's). The other one is the old Schmid process in operation. Both plants worked on the continuous method, but the NAB used centrifugal separation. Between these, the Biazzi plant was in use. Sadly I don't have a photo of that.

Superb photos. Love seeing the old photos of this place. That building was actually built quite late if it was the nineties.
Indeed so - I doubt that it got much more than 5 minutes of use. Ghastly waste of kit, unless the current chaps make any NG on site.
