The make-up of the actual brook as it is today is due to the many alterations and modifications that have been done over the years. Initially, the open brook would have had a few bridges here and there with the odd arch as it passes under buildings. As time passed, the need, or in most cases the redundancy, of industry required the change of structures. This led to the patchwork and mismatching of stone and brickwork.
Myself, that's what fascinates me about the brook. Within a few feet, there is craftwork, barring the recent UU alterations, that spans many decades, even centuries!
