just a question for those of you who run a website how much does it cost and is it worth it and any other information you could provide as i might possibly start my own website for my crappy blurry out of focus photos

To be honest the age of a website for personal urbex is a bit in past imo. Although I still have mine online I’ve not added much to it in recent years and to be honest I’ll probably bin it off at some point soon. Maybe just stick with something like Flickr or Instagram if you must

This is true, I do wish it would come back though but I suppose social media has replaced it for good. Can we all have blogs again?

That said, you can still probably make blogs easily and cheaply, theyre just not very common now

Websites are always infinitely better if you have good, interesting and strong content to share. Tie that with a knack of writing in an interesting way and you are onto a winner.

Sadly social media has turned most people’s brains into sponges with a 5 second attention span cancelling out the relevance of my first paragraph.

The thing I've always valued about websites is they can be referred back to any time in the future for research etc. Social media as you say is for the goldfish brains and its only real value is to be viewed momentarily.

So does mine, it does take a lot of work to maintain but if you do one that's hosted by Wordpress for you then all that hard work isnt needed, its just a lot less customisable

Yep unfortunately CA for example is a royal PITA. I think I'm about 60 pages through 180 that need updating to the changes to the theme. It's taken me about 9 months so far..

Haha I know the pain. I changed my theme a few years back but had to redo the whole lot so it meant about 200 articles had to be redone. Absolutely grim, but always worth it!

I use Squarespace for mine, it is probably one of the more pricey ones but you do get what you pay for.

I pay for the business plan which is their second cheapest one (roughly £20/ month) and that allows me to place Google ads on it which help towards the running cost.

Mine isn't really targeted at other explorers rather members of the public looking for information about a particular building, e.g. if they Google something like 'The Pennine Tower' Google will show my site in the search results.

Oh yes. Nailed it. Social media is unquestionably one of the biggest mistakes of our time. No sequence of words exists that conveys just how awful it is or how much I loathe it. It's a monster and it has fundamentally changed society and changed how we interface with one another and the world around us, for the worst.

I miss websites because they were dedicated spaces for a particular topic, and we visited them on purpose. Nowadays, social media accounts have replaced websites and if we have an interest in a topic we have to visit social media accounts/YouTube channels. The issue with that is we get utter shite in our face along the way, like endless intrusive ads, sponsors, annoying clickbait, "shorts" and other nonsense trying to rob us of our attention and time.

Bring back websites!

Mine which I’ve barely set up has cost me approximately 150 for 3 years. Built on Wordpress using dream host as a host, I’ve had it for four months so far and no complaints.

Having said that I personally feel that in this modern era small websites stand little chance against the simplicity and immense target audience of platforms such as instagram
