Well, the fat lady ain't quite sung yet, but 2020 is almost at an end now. It has certainly been a tough year for everyone, more some than others. And one which made a big proportion of the year off-bounds for exploring. That said, many of us managed to get out-and-about in fits and spurts. So, what were you best explores of 2020? It can be Top 3, Top 5 or Top 10 or anything!

Here’s mine. Our 'main' (and only) holiday was in North Wales, hence it's big influence being felt below.

1. Dinorwic Slate Mine, North Wales, September 2020
Massive, majestic and unforgettable. One visit to this welsh heavyweight is never enough. Hence a revisit is top of the list in 2021, COVID-19 allowing. Explored with my non-forum member mate Gazza.

2. Maenofferen slate mine, North Wales, July 2020
Another welsh classic. Visited on the rainiest day you could ever imagine. Had a good look at the above ground stuff nut only scratched the surface with the mine, so another revisit candidate in 2021. Solo explore.

3. George Barnsley’s, Sheffield, October 2020
Never knew this was still doable so when I heard it was, made my way down to this local explore quick-sharpish. It’s changed a bit since the first time I explored it but still very much worth a couple of hours of your time. Explored with my non-forum member mate Dale.

4. Pen-yr-orsedd Slate Quarry, Talysarn, North Wales, July 2020
Had no expectations when I rocked up to this old quarry on a very sunny July morning. It surpassed all expectations and had many highlights including a still hanging “blondin” and an exquisite little winding house. Solo explore.

5. Stanton Steelworks, Derbyshire, September 2020
This place turned out to be way better than expected. Can’t beat a bit of industrial goodness. Had to skirt round the live stuff but a relaxed and enjoyable wander with @Bikin Glynn

6. The Five Sisters, Willington, Derbyshire, February 2020
Didn’t expect these beauts to be still here in 2020 but here they were so a revisit was in order. Never fail to be impressed with them. Awesome place and always a great explore with my non-forum member mate Gazza.

7. Octel Bromine Works, Amlwck, Anglesey, North Wales, July 2020
Didn’t envisage this being that good but there was far more left than I’d expected, so this place turned out to be a good solo explore.

8. The Citadel, Sheffield, June, 2020
On the list as I’d waited years to see this place. A window of opportunity (quite litterally) opened and in I popped. The best bit is the lovely main hall. Now resealed, but with its future uncertain. Solo explore.

9. Hanging Flat Lead Mine, Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire, December 2020
Been getting into underground stuff/mines this year and although this wasn’t the biggest of mines it was a little cracker and very photogenic. Explored with non-forum member mate Dale.

10. The Deaf Institute, Liverpool, August 2020
Not the largest and most spectacular explore but that main hall with all its stained glass and THAT roof meant that this one just snook in 10th place. Solo explore.

OK - that's it for 2020. Hope 2021 turns out to be a better one for us all. Stay safe and keep on exploring!

I had a pretty quiet year really. Not helped by the cancellation and postponement of my annual States trip, which I had made some epic plans for that all have now been put on the back burner.

Probably my favourite place I did all year was the bomb proof records rooms in Bristol, something totally different to what I normally find myself doing, and a very welcome respite from the scorchio heat of one of the hottest days of the summer.

I also really enjoyed the Engelhards Metal Refinery in Cinderford, OK it's not an epic industrial explore but it was a large place and I found it very photogenic in a lot of areas.

My last favourite place, more so for the whole trip than the actual explore, was RNAS Twatt on the Orkney Islands. It's the furthest north I've ever been, and likely ever will go, and all came about when my friend (and now work partner) took on a removals job delivering goods up on the Orkney Islands in August. Naturally I wanted to go on the trip as I love a good roadtrip, and we spent five days on the road travelling up from Oxford to Orkney and back in an old Ford Transit Luton van that could only do 60mph tops, coupling it with some exploring along the way. One of my fondest memories from what has been a truly difficult year.

Lockdown has limited what most of us could have done this year unfortunately. So this is pretty much all the places I have done this year.

St Michaels Church. Waited years to do this place, glad to have got it done.

Shatterly Whitfield. Waited ages to go, finally got most of it done.

GB and Son's. Not a great explore, but definitely memorable.

Jed Weln or something like that. Just for the enjoyment of sneaking around security.
Report coming soon, unfortunately.

There are plenty more I can think of, some posted on this forum already in certain areas, but I'm not posting loads.

Been a slow year thats for sure.. 7 Cinemas, 3 Power Stations, 2 Car factories, 2 Breweries and 1 Underground railway about sums up my 2020 photo folder.. Not even really down to Covid ether i dont think, just not much worth getting in the car for let alone the camera out for!

Nice idea @HughieD! Considering the current situation, I’d consider it a pretty good year for getting stuff done somehow. Spent a fair amount of time getting round places I had missed and catching up before it was too late but had time for some new stuff too. As for the top 10:

1. ABC/Canon/Forum – Liverpool:

DSC-0109-2.jpg

2. Winnington B Control Room – Northwich:

DSC-0242.jpg

3. Hovis Solent Mills - Southampton:

DSC-0733.jpg

4. Imperial Grain Warehouse - Edinburgh:

DSC-0260.jpg

5. Tullis Russell Power Station - Fife:

DSC-0496.jpg

6. Station Hotel – Ayr:

DSC-0203.jpg

7. Golfhill Public School – Glasgow:

DSC-0427.jpg

8. Robert Fletchers Paper Mill – Oldham:

DSC-0644.jpg

9. Lostock Power Station – Northwich:

DSC-0926.jpg

10. Chatterley Whitfield Colliery – Stoke-on-Trent:

There’s a few public locations that could definitely contend for a spot. It's hard to narrow stuff down, but that will do. Hope everyone has a happy new years! :)

Not done much due to lockdown and then breaking my leg more or less as the lockdown was lifted, Still cant walk properly yet, but here's a few from overseas at the start of the year...

St Philip's Hospital in Malta... a delight to get in as I genuinely did use to hang around this hospital when I used to live on the island 20 years ago:

Underground Flour Mill in Malta, still looking immaculate six years after I first got in:
