Report - North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary, Stoke-on-Trent, May 2018

After a long hiatus, I'm finally working on my backlog of photos and write-ups from my time in the UK; I hope to post more reports soon!

A brief history:
This hospital was established in 1804 as the first of its kind in the region, with an emphasis on the treatment of smallpox. Due to space constraints and pollution from nearby industry, the institution relocated several times until this campus was constructed on a quiet hillside in 1869. Following various expansions, the hospital eventually held over 1,300 beds. After merging with another area health provider, the institution again faced space constraints, relocating to an even larger campus nearby in 2012. Meanwhile, redevelopment plans for the site have stalled in recent years.

The explore:
This was one of my bucket-list locations upon arriving in the UK, and after chatting with a local explorer who knew the place well, we made plans to visit. Entry into the site went smoothly, and soon enough, we were immersed in the rooms and vast corridors of the complex. Despite a few locked doors, and some cat-and-mouse with security, we got to see the majority of the hospital, and made it out in one piece.

Because there was so much to see, and because security was an ever-present concern, I didn't take as many photos or shoot as deliberately as I would have liked. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my time here, and would have loved to stay longer if circumstances allowed.

Are you still able to get inside? I went to check this place out on Monday and I could not find anyway in ‍♀️
